AMERICAN LEGION DEPARTMENT OF CALIFORNIA CONVENTION

Recently I was able to attend the American Legion Department of California Convention in Visalia California. Post 43 Membersare voted on at election time every year to become a delegate and represent our Post and I was happy to be selected this year. It was so great to see so many members from all our Post 43 families in attendance everywhere I went. I am also excited to hear about some of the awards our Post families took back to our house so thank them when you see them.

At convention there is something for everyone whether it is your first convention or your tenth so get nominated next year and go! Besides attending general sessions there are lots of commission and committee meetings and classes on American Legion best practices. I was also able to take advantage of many opportunities to meet and spend time with leaders and members from other Posts. Quickly you realize all of our Posts, no matter what the size, are facing lots of the same issues and have lots of the same challenges so why not either help other Posts or learnfrom them? I am really looking forward to continuing some relationships I developed with Star Post 309, Post 283 Pacific Palisades, Post 328 Norco and Post 53 Hemet.

30 July Sunday

Need you to come to the Post on the 30th of July @ 1000! We have a big volunteer day planned with lots of activities and need your help. We will dispose of clutter around the Post and have a volunteer work party to help clean the grounds and organize the boiler room. The boiler room is used by our maintenance team to store materials to maintain the Post and really needs some TLC. We will also have a small rummage sale in front of the Post if you would like to bring some small items to try to sell or give away. A rummage sale was done a few years ago and from what I hear it was a lot of fun, so we are going to try to do it again and advertise it to the community. We will also have a membership table to tell community visitors what our organization is about.

COMMANDER’S BALL

For months I have been looking forward to the Commander’s Ball on August 12th. This event is sure to sell out so get your tickets now! A wonderful evening by Jennifer Campbell and Melissa Card is planned for us with great music, excellent foodand that dancing stuff. We will also dress up a little if it is easy to do and enjoy each other’s company and recognize some of our members and community leaders.

Jennifer Campbell has told me many times that this is absolutely her last year helping with this event because it takes a lot of work, and she is extremely busy. In the Post 43 bylaws it says the 2nd Vice Commander is in charge of planning and executing Post family events and Jennifer was 2nd Vice Commander seven years ago. Jennifer should have moved on from this role many years ago, but we are lucky she hasn’t. So many of our memberslike Jennifer give and give and if they did move on without having someone else solidly in place these amazing things most of us think just spontaneously come together would suffer or just go away and then we would really notice. So please thank Jennifer when you see her for doing this and many other things for us all these years. And if anyone does want to make a resolution on the floor at the next meeting for Jennifer to continue planning the Commander’s Ball for another sevenyears, I will recognize you right away and “call the question”without a second or discussion.

PARKING IS A PRIVLEGE AND NOT A RIGHT

Disapointed to get a report in the last 24 hours from our parking team that one of our Post members challenged one of them whentold there wasn’t a parking spot for them to park in. The membersaid regardless they were going to park in a non-designated spot even though the lot was full because they are a member of the Post. This type of behavior is unacceptable and if this is true, I am pulling some Bowl Night parking privileges from this member. I have also given out my cell phone to ourtheater/parking team and have instructed them to call me real-time if this ever happens again to resolve this instantly.

As you know the parking for our members during a Hollywood Bowl night as well as a bowl night/bar night is first come first serve and works most of the time. But in order to make this work better I am standing up an ad-hoc/working team meeting to explore reserving spaces for members as well as keeping a first come/first serve posture. If you have thoughts on this subject or would like to help with this please send me an email.
